About
My Family from WiddlyTinks.com
The word frugal gets a bad rap. People hear it and their brains automatically register “cheap”, synonymous with “stingy” or “of low quality” and it doesn’t paint the most flattering picture.
We’re NOT cheap.
We ARE frugal.
In actuality, being frugal is not a negative quality at all – it merely means to get the best value for the price you are paying. Regardless of what it’s for, being frugal means that you weigh all of your options and utilize tools available to you in order to purchase your item while spending the least amount of money.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I welcome you into my world of Sunflowers and Savings! I’m a Long Islander-born and raised. Of course, I’m married to a born and raised Long Islander (with a brief stint in Georgia). Now we’re raising our Long Island born children right here on the Island we love. Is it hard? Sure. We have a very high cost of living. It’s not unusual for us to look at each other after paying our bills and break down in tears…….NAH, we don’t do that at all (or at least don’t let my husband know I told all of you we do that). Kidding aside, the secret to our success on Long Island is this: We live within our means. I know, totally crazy, right? (And of course, no vacation since 2007….we’re severely overdue for one).
Many people ask “How did you come up with the name of your blog?” Here’s my story: I wanted something that had meaning to me. My favorite flower (actually, it’s the only flower I like) is the Sunflower. And the month of November is a very special month for our family. Both of our kids are November babies AND my husband and I had our very first date in the month of November. It’s a month that signifies three “beginnings” if you will, so with the beginning of this blog I figured I’d combine my favorite flower and the month that became the “beginning” of my life.
November Sunflower is here to help all people who want to save money. No matter what anyone else tells you, it really is for ALL PEOPLE. Now if you’re not from Long Island, skip this little section coming up in blue. Skip the blue and head right to the bold, black NOTE. Nothing to see in green. Not missing anything at all.
Really, it’s about my Long Island friends, family, followers, neighbors and fans. It’s all about helping my fellow Long Islanders save money. Young people have it hard and many have left Long Island, their families, homes and friends to be able to live a “better” life. To me, living on Long Island is the better life and I want to share these struggles and money saving tips with others who want to STAY ON LONG ISLAND!
NOTE: I don’t recommend a site, or product until I have used it. I don’t REFER a site, unless I have signed up for it myself and currently use it, of have used it in the past.
Of course, I’m always on the hunt for freebies, coupons and ways to save money (or even earn money-for more on that, check out my favorite blog post here –> CBS News) buying things we need, or things we might actually want! Again, we’re not cheap, we just shop wisely and make the most of what money we do have! Plus, we’re not always able to get the least expensive prices, because at times, quality is sometimes more important than the cost. I buy quality shoes for myself, because they will last and I don’t have to keep buying new ones each year. However, even when I buy for quality, I don’t pay full price for anything! There are always places to get things for less……and my blog can help you save money on all kinds of purchases!
My favorite things to blog about are free music downloads, free food and free activities on Long Island. I love music. I have it on all day long, whether I’m working on something or just hanging with the kids. The right music can just lift your day and help you power through even the worst days. So I find as much free music as I can and, of course, share it with those around me.
Food is my first love (don’t tell my husband and kids! Although, I think they already know). So if I find ways to get free food……I’m getting it! And I always share how to get free food with all of my readers.
Long Island has so much to entertain families. Every season there are ways to spend an afternoon with your family without having to spend a dime-store events, fairs, festivals and parks. When I know about the free stuff, I write about it for everyone to enjoy!
Follow my blog, subscribe to it and share it with everyone! (But remember, those not from Long Island must skip right over that one little section in green…you know the one.)
