Reducing stomach cellulite with THERMIsmooth® body

In order to facilitate this review series, Elyse S. Rafal, M.D., P.C., & her staff at Center for Aesthetic Dermatology & Laser Surgery, provided me with services at no cost. All opinions are 100 percent my own.

Reducing stomach cellulite with THERMIsmooth® body has been an interesting process, that’s for sure. I’m six treatments into my eight scheduled treatments, and I’m enjoying the treatments themselves. I get 40 minutes of a warm, belly massage. I relax, chat with Nurse Lauren, and don’t touch my phone, so my work each Monday isn’t nagging at me. Is it working? We’ll find out after eight treatments, won’t we?

What to do to prepare for your THERMIsmooth® body sessions

No METAL

Leave your jewelry, and underwire bra at home! Just take your rings, bracelets, earrings, anything metal, off and leave it at home. I didn’t expect to start my treatments the day I went in to get my consultation, so I had to remove it all while there. I ended up dropping one of my diamond studs, not realizing it until I was back home. THANKFULLY the staff at Center for Aesthetic Dermatology & Laser Surgery is top notch and found it for me when I called in a panic. So, I recommend leaving all the jewelry at home!

Remove your bra with underwire. If you have a bra that doesn’t have any kind of metal in it, you can wear it. THERMIsmooth uses temperature controlled radio frequency energy. If your skin touches metal during the process, it’ll basically feel hot as hell against the metal. I would imagine, it’ll burn you. However, I’m not a doctor, or scientist, so all I can say is I accidentally hit my arm against a metal table next to me while having the procedure done. It felt like a hot knife in my skin! Leave all metal at home, trust me.

Drink water

I recommend drinking water prior to THERMIsmooth procedures. When I don’t drink enough water, I feel the heat more. I can handle a higher temperature when I’ve properly hydrated, and when I haven’t, the heat has to be turned a bit lower. The higher the heat temperature you can handle, the better it works, as it has been explained to me.

Comfortable clothing

Don’t wear jeans to your appointments. You’ll be more comfortable in sweats, and loose clothing. Nothing tight and constricting. I wear sweatpants, and a loose t-shirt. Heck, if I could get away with it, I’d wear pajamas! Get comfy, it takes at least 20 minutes of time to get the procedure done. If you’re doing it during your lunch break, perhaps wear a comfier outfit on your THERMI days. I’m receiving it on my stomach, so I have to lie down to receive the treatments, but I do believe if you’re getting any body part done, you’ll have to lie down.

What to expect during the procedure

Expect to be slathered in a very cold gel on the area being treated. It’s applied before THERMIsmooth body is started, but it’s also applied throughout the procedure. My treatments are 40 minutes, because I’m having my entire stomach done. It’s got menthol in it, to help with stretch mark fading. If the technician doesn’t use the gel, coconut oil can be used. My nurse switches it up. I seem to be able to handle the heat better when she uses organic coconut oil, but I believe the next couple of sessions we’ll be using the cold gel recommended by THERMIsmooth. I’ve got some stubborn stretch marks!

It gets hot. If you’ve got a lot of cellulite, the first sessions might not be all that warm of a massage. Trust me, they get hotter. Be prepared, and communicate with the person giving you the treatments. The temperature can be adjusted. Obviously, the higher the temperature the better the results. However, if you can’t handle the heat, say so!

What happens after THERMIsmooth body sessions?

Not much happens. You’re treatment area will be red. Some people have said later in the day it feels like they have sunburn for a short time, but I have yet to experience that feeling. Nurse Lauren has done full-on heat with my stomach area, and I have yet to get the sunburn feeling. I’m not sure if it’s because after the treatments I make sure to apply a little aloe to the area, but I started doing that after the third session. Before that, I didn’t feel a sunburn feeling.

It might be that I’ve never really had sunburn on my skin. My skin tends to get red, then turn a nice brown color. Not sure if that has something to do with this process, but I’m putting it out there. However, you could end up getting that sunburn feeling on the treated area.

I also recommend drinking lots of water. You sweat a bit, and it’s a good idea to rehydrate for your skin, anyway!

Dr. Rafal also provided me with her Firming Retinol Body Lotion. It’s got all-trans-retinol in it, which helps lift and tighten skin, and gives a lot of hydration to the skin. I apply it in the morning, and at night. Dr. Rafal formulated the product, and it’s from her skin care line of products. Since she recommended it to help with tighten my skin, along with the THERMIsmooth, I’ve been super strict about making sure I use it twice a day. While on vacation for 5 days, I didn’t have it with me. My skin was not as happy with me while on vacation. It apparently likes Dr. Rafal’s firming lotion!

So far, reducing stomach cellulite with THERMIsmooth® body has gone well. We will see if it has made a difference once the final treatment is done, and we have a photo of my before and after. Fingers crossed the photos show good results!
