Top Tips for Planning a Cross-Country Road Trip

Taking a trip across the country is about as patriotic as it gets. Deciding to take a cross-country road trip and actually going on that trip, though, are two very different things. A successful road trip requires plenty of planning so that you can stay safe and entertained along the way.

Here are a few tips to help you think through the planning process.

Bring Snacks

Before you head out on your trip, it’s a good idea to stock up on snacks. Stocking up before you leave will help you save money since you won’t have to buy overpriced snacks from gas stations. Make sure to select at least a few healthy snacks so that you don’t end up feeling sick while you’re trying to get to your next destination. Lastly, try to only buy non-perishable food items so that you can have a good variety of snacks throughout your trip.

Check Your Vehicle

You can’t have a good cross-country road trip without a reliable vehicle. That’s why you’ll want to take your vehicle to your mechanic before you leave home. Even with a thorough pre-trip check, though, it’s still a good idea to be aware of the location of various towing services along your route. This will help you to know who to call if you break down so that you don’t waste a lot of time.

Plan Your Route

When heading to new locations, it’s easy to assume that the GPS on your phone will prevent you from getting lost. However, if your phone’s battery should die unexpectedly, you’ll be much better off if you take some time to plan your route before you head out. While you don’t have to think through every last turn, getting a general idea of the direction you’ll be heading will pay big dividends in time saved.

Choose Your Companions

Driving across the country takes several days, even if you have multiple drivers who can keep you going without stopping. Since you’ll be with your traveling companions for an extended period of time, it’s best to choose these companions carefully. Of course, if you’re going with your family, there’s not much choice involved. If you’re selecting from a group of friends, though, make sure you choose people who are easy to get along with after the miles and hours begin to wear on your nerves.

Don’t Look Back

Once the planning is complete, it’s important to follow through. The difficult logistics of a cross-country trip can cause doubt to creep in if you’re not careful. Just trust that you’ve done all you can to prepare so that you can hit the road and enjoy your time away from home.
